Former President, Malawi

For me, as a mother, as a victim of maternal health complication, and more importantly as a woman leader in a position of influence and power, it is my moral obligation to do all that I can to contribute to improvement in reproductive health...I will not rest until the job is done, even one woman dying in child birth is too much for me.

— Her Excellency Joyce Banda

Her Excellency Joyce Banda served as the first female vice president and then president of Malawi. During her presidency, she developed the Presidential Initiative for Maternal Health and Safe Motherhood and significantly changed the reproductive health landscape. She was a member of Parliament for the Zomba-Malosa constituency and was minister of gender, child welfare and community services. In 2006, Dr. Banda was appointed Malawi's minister of foreign affairs. She was later appointed as Malawi's goodwill ambassador for safe motherhood by the African Union.
